5 Fashion Staples Reporters and Young Professionals Must Have in their Closet
I posted this picture on my Twitter and Instagram below and I got an overwhelmingly positive response from a lot of my journalism friends —>
I asked on my Twitter account if users wanted to see more fashion advice on my blog, so I shall deliver. If you’re either grabbing a story, meeting an important source, going to a job interview, or a VERY important business meeting…
Have no fear, I am here!
By day, I am a business and education reporter full-time at a small newspaper, The News Virginian. By night, I am of many occupations: blogger, model, AND part-time stylist. I’ve had a passion for fashion since I was little because I was influenced by my mother and sister’s business casual style whenever they go to work. Now, it’s my turn to be fashionable with business wear, especially as a young professional.
These days, workplaces are not particular about “business casual” fashion anymore, as opposed to 10-20 years ago. The general rule of thumb when going on a work assignment or in a professional environment is to dress similarly to the people that are at the event or in the office. If people are dressed formally, then dress formally. If people are laidback, then I would recommend dressing “smart casual”—casual wear that is sophisticated, but convenient for one to wear—because you’ll never know who you’re going to run into.
Here are the 5 Fashion Staples a Reporter or Young Professional Must Have in Their Closet
Blazers are a MUST
Blazers give such a chic and sharp look to any outfit, regardless of how long or short they are. If you want to create the illusion of broad shoulders, blazers will get the job done! This type of outwear is often in different colors, so you can dress for any occasion while on the job. However, if you’re new to fashion, I would recommend starting with a black, white, and tan blazer to go with any look. Then, when you feel comfortable, you can make the blazer a statement piece by wearing a non-neutral color.
2. Non-Ripped Jeans are Completely Okay
All the veteran journalists are probably happy when I say this, but jeans can also be business casual IF you make them business casual! I recommend straight or loose jeans that are non-ripped paired with a collared white top to create a sophisticated and timeless look. These are for the days when you aren’t expecting any specific person to meet or go for an interview that is laid back with their hiring process. Honestly, as a reporter, I wear these jeans on a Monday or Friday if I am not going anywhere important.
3. White Top + Khakis = Chic Neutral Look
I am a big fan of neutral looks and capsule wardrobes because of how versatile they are! Reporters MUST always have a few collared tops in handy to create any professional look they wish. Plus, khakis bottoms lean more on the “smart casual” side of fashion if you’re looking for a regular day in the newsroom. Sometimes…simple is better (and sexy, too).
4. High Heels Make You Look Taller
No ladies, I’m not talking about wearing 7-inch stilettos to the newsroom because I guarantee you’ll regret it. I made that mistake and everyone that I’ve met on work assignment have said something to me about wearing the wrong shoes.
Any pumps or open-toed heels will complete any sophisticated look you’re going for. Heels can make you appear taller and are able to give your body better posture when walking. I would recommend having about three pairs of good-quality heels in black, tan, or red. Dressing in colorful high heels will add such a statement to your look!
5. Don’t Forget…The Leather Fanny Pack
EVERY JOURNALIST MUST CARRY A FANNY PACK. I cannot empathize with this enough! I’m not talking about your mom and dad’s boring ’80s fanny pack, I’m talking about a fanny pack in full leather that you can stuff your business cards, driver’s license, cell phone, AND a reporter’s notepad and pen! A leather fanny pack can create a sleek look while you’re on the job, BUT also it is STURDY. I recommend Banana Republic’s Heritage Leather Belt Bag (the link is under the picture!—not sponsored) because it’s fashionable, but you can also stuff the little things you need. Being a reporter is an adventure and you can’t always pack too many items with you, so the fanny pack will come in handy when you’re out on the scene.
You’ll thank me later! :D
